Corruption Lab (CLEAR) Announces Signature Event

The Democracy Initiative’s Corruption Lab for Ethics, Accountability, and the Rule of Law, or CLEAR, will hold a major event featuring Harvard professor and CNN analyst David Gergen and William Browder, founder and CEO of Hermitage Capital Management, the largest foreign investor in Russia until 2005 when he was expelled from the country for exposing corruption. Additional speakers will address how corruption is undermining democratic accountability, economic prosperity and adherence to the rule of law and what can be done to combat it.

“The CLEAR Lab is one of four interdisciplinary labs in the Democracy Initiative’s ecosystem created to address major challenges facing democracy today,” said Melody Barnes, co-director for policy and public affairs for the Initiative. “With this event, CLEAR is bringing the public engagement aspect of its mission to life in a significant way, complementing its considerable research and teaching efforts.” 

The lab is led by Daniel W. Gingerich (Politics) and Sandip Sukhtankar (Economics). Within the College of Arts & Sciences, CLEAR’s core faculty also includes Shan Aman-Rana (Economics), David Singerman (History and American Studies), and Silvia Tidey (Anthropology and Global Studies). Michael Gilbert and Deborah Hellman serve as core faculty representing the School of Law.

The Tuesday, Nov. 19 event at UVA’s Miller Center will highlight one of the Initiative’s key objectives: to bring together UVA scholars and world leaders to examine critical policy issues.

There is no cost to attend the event; however, registration is required, and lunch will be provided. Continuous shuttle service will also be available from the UVA Chapel to the Miller Center and back throughout the event.
