Community MLK Celebration Events Featuring A&S Faculty
Arts & Sciences faculty and their departments are playing a variety of roles in this month’s series of Community MLK Celebration events, which include a sold-out keynote address at the Paramount Theater next Tuesday evening by MSNBC national correspondent Joy Reid.

Ticket holders for the Jan. 23 address by Reid, host of “AM Joy” and “The Reid Report” and author of Fracture: Barack Obama, the Clintons and the Racial Divide must be inside the theater by 6:20 p.m., when unused tickets will be released to the standby line on a first-come, first-served basis.

Thursday, Jan. 18
Loretta Ross: “CALLING IN the CALLING OUT Culture – Accountability Through Love”
4-5:30 p.m., Harrison Institute and Small Special Collections Library Auditorium
Presented by the Maxine Platzer Lynn Women’s Center in partnership with the Carter G. Woodson Institute for African American and African Studies, the Department of Women, Gender and Sexuality, the Center for Global Health, the School of Nursing and the Office for Equal Opportunity and Civil Rights, this conversation with Loretta Ross, an expert on women’s issues, racism, and human rights, will inspire participants to address people with compassion and a spirit of inclusion even—or especially—in the crucial moments when their behavior is problematic.
This event will be followed by a reception from 5:30-6:00pm.

Josh St. Hill: A Live Performance and Conversation with A.D. Carson
5-6 p.m., UVA Music Library, Old Cabell Hall
The “Making Noise Series” and UVA Library present “Josh St. Hill: A Live Performance and in Conversation with A.D. Carson”
Join us for a conversation with and performance by Josh St. Hill. A local high school student and artist, St. Hill wrote and performed the award-winning “A King’s Story,” which tells the story of a black teen killed by the police. Assistant Prof. A.D. Carson (Music) will moderate a conversation with St. Hill about his consciousness-raising hip-hop creation.
A reception will follow at 6 p.m.

UVA's Black Graduate Professional Student Organization and the Darden School of Business DSA Diversity Committee present a mini-symposium, featuring lectures by Claudrena Harold (History), Maya Hislop (Ph.D. candidate, English) and Luke Williams (fourth year A&S undergraduate studying Political and Social Thought).
